#PromoteYourSelf

As a writer you are going to come across the question: what social platforms should I be on? While there are many social platforms out there, I am going to focus on four: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.

When choosing the one or ones for you remember these two things: Am I ABLE to use the Social Platform effectively? And, Am I USING the Social Platform to its fullest potential? If no to either of these questions, then maybe consider not using the medium. As a writer your focus should be on writing, so spend your other time promoting yourself wisely and sparingly.

Facebook – You can either use your personal page or create an author page. Keeping a separate author page allows you to schedule posts and allows your page to be open to the world while still maintaining privacy. Facebook is still the most used social media, with a large scale audience from young to old.

Twitter – Having a Twitter handle can allow you to blast out information and interesting quotes at all hours of the day. While harder to gain traction, Twitter is a great secondary platform to use. Be careful because it is easy to get sucked in all hours of the day onto Twitter rather than focusing on your writing.

Instagram – While Instagram is more picture based than word based, it allows your reader’s glimpses into your daily life as well as seeing your physical book. This is what connects you personally to the reader, rather than your writing.

Snapchat – Many businesses have moved over to Snapchat trying to catch the younger generation. Beware, same as Twitter, to not lose yourself in hours of creating content with little traction. It can be used more similar to Instagram and give glimpses into your daily life and feels more immediate than Instagram.

While these four are not the only social platforms, they do have a large audience. If your book revolves around a more niche audience, research what that audience spending time on and try to get their attention on those platforms. You can also be innovative in what you are using. How about a tinder profile for your main character? Whatever platforms you do pick, make sure to use the ones you’re most comfortable and most likely to use.
