Assessment of the Manuscript
This does not include any actual editing. Included in the assessment is a full read through of the manuscript and a report going over points of concept, plot, characters, structure, POV, pacing and language. In the report are suggestions for further rewriting and restructuring.
Developmental Editing
This can be used before the actual writing begins. Organizing material into thematic chapters. Major rewriting and restructuring of manuscript. Ensuring consistent heading/chapter/part titles. Creating an appropriate title. Revising for consistent tone that suits the intended audience. Suggesting insertions that are necessary for the flow and coherence of the text.
Substantive/Structural Editing
Clarifying or reorganizing a manuscript for content and structure. Identification of manuscript problems such as formatting. Suggestions of changes for the improvement of dialogue, plot, characterization and other narrative conventions. Changes will be suggested NOT drafted. Does not include the following unless specified:
- Research
- Fact Checking
- Writing original material
- Negotiating changes with Author
All Substantive/Structural Edits include a page-by-page edit and an itemized report suggesting editorial changes.
Note: A Substantive/Structural Edit is not a line-by-line edit.
Copyedit
Clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, smoothing language and other non-mechanical line-by-line editing. Repair points of grammar, point-of-view, diction, sentence structure, tenses and other non-mechanical inconsistencies. This is a line-by-line edit.
Proofreading
Editing for spelling, incorrect word usage and punctuation (may include minor grammatical changes); checking for consistency of mechanics and internal consistency of facts. May include Canadianization of manuscript; metrication; providing or changing system of citations; writing or editing captions and/or credit lines. This is purely a mechanical edit.
